Stitch count stays fixed
A 140 × 140 pattern still has 140 stitches across and down on any fabric. Fabric count tells you how many stitches fit in an inch. Divide each dimension by the effective stitch count per inch to get the finished design size. Changing fabric count changes physical size; it does not add detail to the chart or change the number of grid positions.
Compare a real example
For a 140 × 140 chart: 14-count Aida gives a 10 × 10 inch design, 16-count gives 8.75 × 8.75 inches, and 18-count gives approximately 7.78 × 7.78 inches. With a 3-inch margin on every side, the cloth dimensions are 16 × 16, 14.75 × 14.75 and approximately 13.78 × 13.78 inches. Round the purchase size up rather than cutting below the required dimensions.
Choose for comfort as well as size
Higher-count fabric uses smaller stitches. Consider lighting, eyesight, needle handling and how densely you want the floss to cover the cloth. Work a small sample with your intended fabric and strand count before committing to a large piece. The best choice is the one that produces a result you like and is comfortable for you to stitch, not simply the smallest finished design.
Account for linen and evenweave
When stitching over two threads, divide the fabric count by two: 28-count evenweave over two gives 14 stitches per inch, and 32-count linen over two gives 16. If you stitch over one, the calculation is different. The main comparison table uses over two for linen and evenweave; the reverse-sizing tool lets you choose over one or over two explicitly.
Fit the cloth and the frame separately
A frame opening describes the visible design space. Your fabric must also have enough extra material to mount or finish the piece. In frame-fit mode, enter the actual visible opening rather than the outside frame dimensions. In fabric mode, enter your cloth dimensions and reserve margins. Check the result in both orientations before cutting, and keep extra cloth if the finishing method needs it.
